To ask: Why go to Egypt?

is like asking: Why breathe?

What is it about Egypt?

It has been a place refuge for millennia. Abraham fled there and shared his knowledge of things eternal and God’s handiwork with the Egyptians. Joseph was taken there against his will, but rose to great heights. The children of Israel sojourned in this narrow strip of green along the Nile for 400 years until Moses led finally them to the Promised Land.

And Joseph, Mary and the baby Jesus escaped there to avoid Herod’s decree.

Even Napoleon was fascinated with its legends and lore. The conquerer wanted to see the first of all the seven wonders of the ancient world. He wasn’t the first. Or the last.

Just ask Anthony as he wooed Cleopatra. He couldn’t help himself, as Shakespeare put it: “I am dying, Egypt, dying; only I have importuned death awhile, until of many thousand kisses the poor last I lay upon my lips.”

Yes, Egypt and Rome have had their moments.

And, now it’s finally your turn, your chance to unlock the mystery of this ancient land that has held—and still holds—so many visitors in its dusty grip.

Your adventure begins in Cairo–you leave the U.S on Thursday and arrive there on Friday. The next morning, you’ll find yourself staring up at the great pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx, a great time to reflect upon what eternal secrets Abraham may have shared with his Egyptian hosts.  The Egyptians’ obsession with man’s journey from here to eternity is carved in stone as you will see at the outdoor museum of Luxor and in the Valley of the Kings,  the Karnak and Luxor Temples.  Is it mere coincidence that three prophets lived in Egypt and that each, Abraham, Joseph and Moses, left a record of scripture? It is interesting to note that all who are from the tribe of Joseph have a connection here; did you know that Joseph’s wife,  the mother of Ephraim and Manasseh was the daughter of the High Priest of the ancient religious center of On? It’s something to look into!

On Tuesday, we’ll fly to Rome and connect those ancient dots. After catching our breath and making a few journal entries and reviewing our collection of photographs, we’ll spend the night in the home of emperors and popes and the next day travel to our home on the sea, the Costa Pacifica.

And what a home it is!

With more than 1,500 cabins available–including 91 with direct access to the spa, 521with private balconies and 58 suites–it is definitely a floating luxury y hotel, complete with five restaurants (and a chocolate bar!), four pools, five jacuzzis and the Samsara spa. If you overdo it either the buffet or one of the restaurants, you can work it off on the outdoor jogging track, spend some time in the gym or visit the pool. And, if all else fails, attend the theatre or find a lounge chair somewhere and fall asleep as you pretend to read a book.

The  point is, there’s no excuse for getting bored on the Costa Pacifica.

First, we sail northwards to Genoa (made famous by Christopher Columbus), arriving on Friday. On Saturday, our destination is Barcelona, Spain, the capital of the Catalonia region, famous for its art and architecture; Sunday, we cruise to the isle of Palma de Mallorca, the capital and largest city in the “autonomous community of the Balearic Islands” and originally a Roman camp. Then, the Costa Pacifica heads to Malta in the center of the Mediterranean, south of Sicily, and a key nexus point in World War II.  Our final stop before returning to the Italian mainland is Calgliari on the island of Sardinia, a popular summer and beach destination, famous for its clear and pristine waters.

On Thursday, we arrive in Rome, for a tour of the Coliseum and then a visit to the new LDS temple site and the “piazza” that includes the beautiful visitors center and first-hand look at stained-glass windows, the murals and certainly, the statues of the Christus and the apostles, all created out of white marble from the Carrara quarry north of Florence. The following day takes us to the Vatican and to nearby sites in Rome.

On Saturday, we say arrivederci to Rome, Italy and our new friends, after visiting places where prophets and then ancient–and modern–apostles sojourned.

This promises to be more than just splendid 16 days in the Mediterranean, it should be an unforgettable opportunity to recharge your spiritual batteries and give you more mysteries to unlock as you search the scriptures.

Egypt, Rome and the ancient world are calling! You’ll find the answer to the ancient question: why breathe, why go to Egypt? You don’t have to read the Egyptian text, The Book of Breathings–to find out: you just make the journey.

Smooth sailing!
